About Me

Hello, I’m Janet. My personal motto is “never stop learning.” That applies to the way I approach therapy - I see it as a learning journey that I take together with every individual client, during which I learn from them and they learn from me. It’s also a motto I live by: I returned to school as a mature student and earned my Master of Social Work from North Carolina State University in 2019.

My experience is wide-ranging and started before I began my Social Work degree. I spent many years as a family caregiver and advocate for my own child with a medically complex condition. This led to a desire to support others facing health challenges. I work from the holistic perspective that injury affects the whole person, whether it is an injury to the soul or to the body.

While earning my MSW, I interned with a housing agency and then as a tobacco treatment counsellor. To keep up with expenses I also worked as a certified nurse assistant, caring for aging individuals in their homes. This influenced my post-graduate work as a Caregiver Navigator during the COVID-19 pandemic, providing phone support to individuals caring for family members with dementia across the U.S. state of North Carolina. My clinical experience as a counsellor began in early 2022.

My Approach

I draw heavily on Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and other cognitive approaches to help people to understand and navigate their problems using their own thoughts. In doing so I also integrate mindfulness practice and values work, gently leading clients first to consider what is important to them personally, and then to put it into practice to achieve richer and more rewarding lives. I am certified in ART (Accelerated Resolution Therapy), an evidence-based intervention that helps individuals work through difficult memories and experiences and emerge feeling relief and hope.

Who I See

I am passionate about working with people who are embarking on or already undergoing change, whether that involves loss, identity transitions, personal growth, or any other life passage. I work with adults (18+) across the lifespan including elders (65+), first responders, and military personnel.

My Practice

Like all clinical social workers, I believe in meeting my clients where they are. For me that means speaking your language. I do this by reflecting back what you say and offering you new ways to talk about your challenges, freeing you from judgments, diagnostic terms, and medical jargon. This can transform the way you see your challenges, which can be an incredibly empowering experience.

My Location

I see clients both virtually across New Brunswick and in person in Fredericton.
