How we understand suicide
We know that many people feel there is no way out. They often believe they provide no value to the world and that others are better off without them.
There is a strong sense of hopelessness, there does not seem to be any solutions to their struggles and there is no way they can even help themselves anymore.
Sometimes it is impulsive rage or revenge seeking, sometimes it comes from shame, self-hate and no self compassion.
Sometimes people who are suicidal give hints that this is on their mind, be it subtle or direct. This is not always the case though; sometimes there is no warning at all.
Everyone has a role to play in this growing issue though. Don’t be afraid to confront a loved one and ask them directly if they are having feelings of ending their life. So many people are very skilled in masking internal distress.
Vulnerability is hard and may have been met with no support or criticism in the past. Sometimes if someone is feeling very low and then something painful or significant happens like a relationship ends or their job ends they reach a breaking point.
You can check in and offer support, provide hope and empathy but don’t make promises you can’t keep.
There is a solution, they just cannot see it right now.
There are people at our practice who are waiting for a call from anyone in need.
Accepting help is the first step.
